Websites & Blogs We Heart. Daria says: Two of my favorite websites to hit up for healthy inspiration are The Nourishing Gourmet and The Old Foodie. The Nourishing Gourmet always delivers cheap, healthy, comforting meal ideas. I'm eternally indebted to this site for introducing me to coconut milk-based pudding (recipe here). The Old Foodie is an incredibly entertaining food history site that highlights menus and food trends from the distant past. I love to see how eating habits have changed over the years; I find that it helps me to put current food fads into perspective.

Kristen says: I get inspiration from so many sources when it comes to healthy living. Diana's Little bit of Spain in Iowa is super practical and fun. She is a great source for all things local and homemade! I also love Sprouted Kitchen. Sara and Hugh's photos are magnificent and the recipes are so clear. I go here when I'm feeling especially ambitious in the kitchen! I know I can always go to Martha Rose Shulman for a healthy feast. She has an amazing recipe archive that never lets me down. Last of all, I love Rebecca's Playful Noshings. I really want to make her version of kefir and her fig jam!

Because we think it's worth mentioning again, here are the sites chosen as favorites by YOU and featured in the August newsletters.

Healthy Eating News & TidBits. Spotlight in Sodium. The percentages you see on a food label for Sodium are based on a daily value of 2400 mg per day. But the REAL guideline for Sodium in the American diet recommended by the Dietary Guideline for Americans (2005) says that: "Individuals with hypertension, blacks, middle-aged and older adults should aim to consume no more than 1,500 mg of sodium per day." This means that individuals in these high risk groups should basically MULTIPLY the number on food labels by 1.6. For the rest of the population, you should consume less than 2,300 milligrams (mg) of sodium a day. This is about 1 teaspoon of table salt daily.

So for example, if a food label has listed a daily value of 26% for sodium, this means that the high risk populations mentioned above are ACTUALLY consuming closer to 40%. This is a huge disparity! Again, for individuals with hypertension (or have a family history), blacks, middle-aged and older adults - pay especially close attention to the sodium content on food labels. You probably have a higher daily intake than you think.<

Healthy Activities. What does your September workout plan look like? Remember to change up your workout schedule regularly to get maximum benefits. It could be as simple as switching the days that you do things or changing up the workout entirely - like less machines and more free weights or more cardio. My September workout is geared towards avoiding the burnout I experienced after July where I did entirely too much! 2 days running, 2 days weights (legs/abs & back/biceps on one day; legs/abs & chest/triceps/shoulders on the next). Rinse & repeat.
